Summer 2012 events

It's time for some fun....come join if you can at the following MTB-KC events this summer:

June 23 - Jackson County Journey : MTB Century

Not for the weak at heart or legs.  This is a strict no PAB ride...

http://www.facebook.com/events/469780563038707/

Who: Anyone
What: 100+ miles of a pure Jackson County Journey
When: June 23. Start at 8:00 am
Where: Begins at the Trolly Track Trail trailhead, Volker and Brookside (near UMKC, Russell Stover, Plaza Library)
Why: It is time.
How: Trolly Trail-->BuRP (River, BoHaCa, Ox Bow, Wagon, Serengeti, Ox Bow, Basement, River)-->Blue River Road-->Swope (Wudchuck P1/2, Rancho P4, Wudchuck P3, Wudchuck Offshoot, Rancho P3/1)-->Blue Springs Lake (Lake Vista, North Shore)--Adams Dairy Parkway Trail-->Landahl (Tasty, Lollipop, Rim Job, Family+Offshoots, Scott's New Loop, Family/Dave's Maze, Will's)-->Little Blue Trace-->Stadiums-->Brush Creek Trail

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/96596365

We'll stop somewhere in Blue Springs together after the lake trails to regroup and get a real meal (where exactly TBD). Other than that, food, water, and other support is on your own. Won't try to drop anyone, but won't sit around all day waiting on you either. Got 100+ miles to finish, hopefully before dark. All the trail systems have water available at them.

Probably try to keep around a ~15 MPH average on the road sections to get us between the gnar. Hopefully a bigger group will provide opportunity for rest (drafting).

Come on out and join the fun. If you've never done a century with dirt included, come gitchyasum. I personally promise you will make it back home (unless you don't...)

Should end up being right at 110 miles or so...about 40% dirt, 60% gravel and pavement.

July 21 - Colavita Cross Country Challenge @ WYCO Lake Trails

Postponed-Colavita Crocodile Rock

Hello:

It is with great regret that I must postpone the Colavita Crocodile Rock originally scheduled for Saturday, April 7, 2012. My father is quite near to losing his 9 year battle with cancer, and the next few days/couple weeks are going to be dedicated fully to him, my mom, and the rest of my family. I've already missed one week of work and school and will likely miss all this week as well. I just do not have the time, and frankly will not make the time over my family, to tie up the last loose ends, and do the finishing & preparation work that needs to be done the next 2 weeks so that I can promote a successful event.

It kills me that I have to postpone, especially since it is my first "real" promotion attempt, and since we have had perfect weather so far this season. My head is just not in the right spot right now to promote a race within the next 2 weeks. There is also a possibility that we will be in Arkansas for his burial depending on when he finally does pass. I guess this is more of a precaution than anything; I'd rather do it now than have to do it the day before the race.

We will reschedule for July 21 (the original date of the "Endurance Race"). The endurance event will be replaced with the typical XC/3 hour events (basically the endurance day will now be our series race). I would like to make this weekend into more of a festival type atmosphere, perhaps even doing the races at night for a change of pace/something cool to do in the summer.

Thank you all for your guidance and support,
Brett Shoffner

halcyon wrap

thanks for coming everyone. heard there were some unexpected surprises, sorry about that.

it was a great day to be out on a bike. i was jealous, definitely.

see you next year!

SATURDAY MORNING!!!

Looking like absolutely PERFECT weather for a day of gravel! Should be around the melting point starting out, warming up to 51* by the afternoon with lots of sunshine the next couple days to dry those roads out a bit, but not too much to make them dusty

I've also heard a rumor that Dan the Man (Dan Hughes, owner of Sunflower Bike) is stepping up HUGE and wants to bring everyone coffee and doughnuts before we start. This cam completely FROM DAN with absolutely nothing from me. I didn't even tell him we were meeting outside the flower!

From what I'm gathering underground, there should be a TON of people on this ride, at all ability levels. The 40 mile course if "fairly" flat except down by Baldwin, while the 63 mile route has some good rollers and is a hell of a workout for the tough dogs. If you're still on the fence, get off and get your ass to Lawrence saturday morning!

Halcyon Holiday!

Photos from last year:
http://mtbkc.blogspot.com/2010/12/hhgg-photos.html

Gravel grinder tips (written for this ride last year, new version coming soon, but this gives you some ideas):
OK, I am riding a fixed gear, mtb frame set up with cx components (skinny carbon fork, drop bars, etc). My gear ratio is 2:1 (34-17), but I like to spin a little more than the average guy to save my knees for later. If this were a race, I would probably run something more like 2.3:1 (34-15, 39-17, 46-20, 43-19, -ish ranges). I have front brake only and feel like this should suffice, not too many hardcore sketchy downhills, as long as the roads aren't too icy :) For tires I have a 38cc Specialized Crossroads in the front and a 35cc Ritchey Speedmax on the rear (both are faster rolling treads with side knobbies, highly recommend them for gravel) and I plan to run about 55 psi up front and about 58-60 psi in the rear. I would recommend around the same PSI ranges for your Cross bike set-ups. (Now I run 34-15 exclusively on gravel, the 17 was just TOO much spinning, especially on a fixie)

If you're coming on a mtb don't worry! I've done plenty of gravel grinders on my fat knobbies. Definitely try to get some fast rolling tires if you can or even some fatty slicks would work. I've done gravel grinders on full suspension bikes, full rigid mtbs and front suspension mtbs. For full suspensions I recommend putting on your pro pedal or locking out the rear suspension and probably the front for most parts too, until you get fatigued (suspension on gravel is really nice sometimes :) Run 60 psi in your fatty tires, they'll suck up a lot of shock and higher psi will let you roll faster.

For rigid mtb guys, 50 psi will take a little of the edge off and still not make you feel like your bogging in the sand. Ergon grips are helpful as hell, so are bar ends. Dead wrists due to bad position and lack of position options is way too common in these type of rides...move around your bars, a lot, your arms will thank you later.

gear:
make sure you have at least 2 tubes, and a hand pump or co2. I will have a schreader adapter for gas station air when we roll through towns so we can pop some in there if needed, but you gotta get there! Also recommended is multi-tool, chain breaker, extra links, zip ties, patch kit, and emergency tire boots. And TP. This is what I'll be packing, along with 2 water bottles.

dress in layers...it's supposed to be 28 when we take off and around 40 by rides end. I recommend starting cold, we'll warm up fast in the rollers south of town, and go through 3 towns for warm-up opportunities and gain 12-15 degrees during the time we'll be out.

See you December 17!

news...

Broke my leg at Boss Cross yesterday. Micah Gordon and Nick Valdez are going to be coordinating Tuesday Night Universes for a few weeks probably. I'm still going to try and be there if I can, but look for these two on the bikes to lead for the night.

Halcyon Holiday is still a go! Obviously, I won't be able to ride, but am trying to figure out a car situation with the parents for that day so I can play support crew for everyone. I graduate the day before, so I'll throw some guilt at them ;)

see you on the dirty.

Courtois Challenge this week!

details can be found in posts below...check them out please, it'll benefit you.

Original details:
THIS RIDE/RACE IS TOTALLY SELF-SUPPORTED! (ie: no "official" aid stations, see below)

Courtois Challenge
MTB out and back ride/race
100% singletrack!
55 miles.
From Council Bluffs Lake to Berryman Campground, and back again!
Camping and riding all weekend at Council Bluffs Lake.

Saturday July 23, 2011
8:00 am start time
From Wild Boar Campgrounds, Council Bluffs Lake National Recreation Area.

THIS RIDE/RACE IS TOTALLY SELF-SUPPORTED!
However, there are plenty of trail heads between CBL and Berryman (Hazel Creek is about halfway between both) that you can have a support crew meet you at if so desired, or if everyone was smart, they'd find someone to lug a bunch of shit up to Berryman for everyone :) WHICH WE CAN DO FOR YOU!!! SEE BELOW.

How's this gonna work?
No money, no license, no excuses, and absolutely no bitching. PLEASE be prepared, I cannot stress this enough. I highly recommend a water filter/water purification tablets so that you don't have to carry 300 oz of water (which still may not be enough during mid-July).
We'll meet at 7:45 am in Wild Boar Campground, at the self-pay kiosk (entrance to campground) to make it easy on everyone. We'll then roll out neutral until we hit the actual Ozark Trail (I will be leading so it will stay neutral :) I will be camping both Friday and Saturday nights at CBL, I recommend you do the same and drink cold beer with me after this epicness.

and of course, I'll be single speeding it :)

This will be an amazing, no pressure ride/race and great training for the upcoming Berryman Trail Epic. I will have a clipboard stashed at Berryman (I will be there). I will let people know where it is the day of the ride/race, once you find it, you will sign it, time stamp it and head back to CBL.

More stuff:
water/gatorade and bag drops. These will be available for you. I'll be on/off riding the route. We will have water/gatorade for you at BOTH Hazel Creek and Berryman. Also, if you want to have us take anything to berryman for a bag drop, we will be glad to do so (MAKE SURE YOUR BAG IS MARKED! WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE, yada yada yada). This should make the ride A LOT more tolerable and doable for folks.

Disclaimer: However, you are still responsible for you. We will NOT have room for people who bonk. we will not have maps. We will not have food/nutrition for you other than blue powered gatorade mixed with ice cold water and ice cold water at Hazel Creek and Berryman. Please have all your necessary tools/tubes/butt creme/water filtration devices/etc present and at your disposal.

See you saturday!!!

Courtois Challenge flyer

upcoming productions, summer/fall 2011

July 23-Courtois Challenge (see post below for initial information)

September and October-Tuesday Night Cross Races at various parks around midtown...Theis, Gillham (south and north parts), Hyde, Roanoke, Penn Valley, and Troost Parks will be used on a differing basis. It will be a points series similar to what I've done in the past with the Hyde Park CX and what BK does with Swayze Memorial Cross Series.

December 17-Mark your calendars for the Second Annual Halcyon Holiday Gravel Grinder metric century in and around my beautiful hometown of Lawrence, Kansas, USA. Plan on 100k of the finest gravel and hills the area has to offer. It should be a great time as always and will include AT LEAST one town to go through, if not a couple.

As always, these are all free. no license is necessary. no official support will be offered (other than moral support and perhaps a tool/tube loan). your ride/race at your own risk. Etc. etc. etc.

hope to see you soon on the dirty.

no short track...

hey folks,

i've decided to not host short track this summer. Not enough people show up for me to put the time in that I could be building trail someplace. not to mention, it basically takes one night that I could be riding too, which lately seems like they're getting fewer and more spaced apart. Someone else feel free, but I'm only going to be focusing on promoting gravel grinders, one time events, and next year (hopefully) a UFD mtb race.

enjoy your rides!

Monday, May 9, 2011

sunday urban mtb.

Trails suck and I'm sick of getting hammered on my fixie every Sunday road riding with cat 2 guys that have gears. Come join me for some Urban Dirty Fun this Sunday afternoon.

Sunday Feb. 20
1 pm
Volker Bike Shop, 39th and Bell
Urban MTB ride

Expect to be off-road as much as possible, but there will be plenty of pavement unfortunately. At least have a CX bike, please...road bike will not be fun on some stuff I'm planning. Expect levees, cobbles, west bottoms alleys, dirt/gravel access roads, grass, paved trail/roads, old trolly tracks, loading docks, curbs, disc golf trail through cliff drive if it's not too stupidly sloppy, etc.

I'm planning on around 3-4 hours, plenty of bail out spots of course though since we'll be winding through the Boulevard/Bottoms/River/Crossroads/NE/and back.

hope to see lots of fat tires sunday.

Gravel Between the Lakes
Metric Century Gravel Grinder
Saturday January 15, 2011
9:00 am, Sunflower Bike Shop
Cue Sheet and Map will be provided.
Make sure you have AT LEAST 2 extra tubes, pump, multi-tool, etc.
Extra jacket/gloves recommended, especially if it's really cold.

We're gonna be out climbing some serious gravel stuff with nice stretches of flat between along some water. Very pretty scenery along some bluffs north and west of Lawrence.

Check out the map below, and check the elevation profile...If you're single speeding or fixie (I'm planning on fixed again 34-17), I would recommend a pretty easy spinning gear. I'm serious about a couple of the climbs, especially if we get north/west wind or there's snow on the ground.

See you then!

2011 upcoming promotions...

January 15, Saturday, 9:00 am--Gravel between the Lakes, Metric Century Gravel Grinder, Starts and Ends at Sunflower OUtdoor and Bike, we'll head north and west toward Lake Perry then head south toward the Kansas River and Clinton Lake, go across the dam and swing out towards Lonestar Lake before coming back into town near Haskell.

February 12, Saturday, 9:00 am--MetroGreen Loop, mileage undetermined at this time...using paved/limestone trails in kc with some potential for easy singletrack also. There will also be some pavement to get between some stuff...I'm thinking around 80 miles with a lunch stop around 50....of course it is february and i could be completely off my rocker...we'll see how winter is treating us here in a month or so...

Spring 2011
Beginning early March I will be hosting a weekly track race series. yes that's right TRACK RACING SERIES. as in fixies...i don't care if you have drop bars though, what gear you run, or what tires you have either. this will not be in the same place every week, but will be in the same general area (midtownish) and will vary between paved and grass tracks. I literally just thought this up an hour ago, so more details to come when I get back into KC and get some scouting done...I am going to try and have the days and times (which will be the same every week) and venues all lined up for an 8 race series. Most likely Wednesday nights. Keep it open.

hhgg photos

ok got it figured out...that was quick...short re-cap below the photos!

Halcyon Holiday Gravel Grinder wrap-up and next production...

WOW! What an absolutely awesome turnout! 20-25 people came out to tackle some gravel south of Lawrence, Kansas, USA. A big group held together most all the ride, and the sun finally decided to come out from behind the clouds at the end of the ride. A perfect 5-10 mph south wind wasn't cold, but wasn't warm going in to it or getting the cross wind, but it sure was nice going back to Lawrence from Baldwin. And how'd you guys like 1750 road after the overlook point? :) It's one of my favorite parts at least.

I was so psyched I got to share that route with everyone that came out...even though I need to work on my directional cues and even though I got dropped on my own ride :) We did have some good exploration, including a little "freeway" ride on the freshly graded dirt of the brand new highway 59. That was an unexpected treat. Sorry I wasn't there to clarify the "dead end" /gated road near the end...It's a very fun B-road through the future (way future) lawrence wastewater treatment plant. If you rode it great! if not, oh well.

john williams has sent me some photos already, I will get them up as soon as I figure out this macbook software a little more...if you have anymore e-mail them to me, bscm8 (at) umkc (dot) edu

The next event I'll be hosting is this:

GRAVEL BETWEEN THE LAKES
Metric Century Gravel Grinder
Lawrence, KS, USA
Saturday Jaunary 15, 2011
9:00 am
Starts and ends at Sunflower Bike, 8th and Mass
FREE PARKING in the garage at 10th and New Hampshire
Map here: http://www.mapmytri.com/routes/view/26179510
If you thought yesterday had some climbing, you better bring your legs in January. Gravel hills north of Lawrence are nastyyyy.

See you all on the gravel again soon! Don't forget about our local series!

Halcyon Holiday Gravel Grinder juicy details

Route map:

Start: 9 am Sunflower Outdoor and Bike, 8th and Mass
Finish: Sunflower Outdoor and Bike
Pit Stops: Baldwin x2 (miles 23 and 46), Wellsville (mile 36)
Metric Century. 63 miles total
A COMPASS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Make sure you know directions north, south, east, west, or are with someone who does.

Bike Recommendations:

I recommend starting cold, we'll warm up fast in the rollers south of town, and go through 3 towns for warm-up opportunities and gain 12-15 degrees during the time we'll be out.

see you tomorrow!

Winter Wander Dirty Road Ride

More details:

Gonna be about 50 miles.
Probably 60%+ pavement. Also lots of river levees. And some easy singletrack.

Route will go: West Bottoms, Kansas River, MO River, East Bottoms, Blue River, Stadium Area, Swope Park, Trolly Track Trail.

This ride will be no-drop (at least from my stand-point). Fast guys can go ahead, but no guarentee that you'll know where to go. This is a dirty exploration ride.

You can figure it out from there, for now :)

Halcyon Holiday

Have been getting great reception about the Halcyon Holiday Gravel Grinder. Keep spreading the good word! I want to see 100+ of you on December 18, let's make it happen :)

Details here: http://mtbkc.blogspot.com/2010/08/december-18halcyon-holiday.html

Got a little blurb on Gravel Grinder News.

And Cornbread is gonna try to round up some peeps from Nebraskey to come down and show us how to ride gravel. You may have heard of this Cornbread guy...he won a little race called the Dirty Kanza 2010, in 13 hours. (bug eyes)

and the route down right now is tentative...until I get out and ride it (which may not be until september, october or november) no route is final...be rest assured though that I will have an official map on mapmyride to download at least 2 weeks prior to the race. And of couse I'll have cue sheets for you, courtesy of my tuition dollars at UMKC :)
